Google has remembered the 97th birth anniversary of Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja (BKS) Iyengar, one of the foremost yoga teachers in the world, who is often referred to as the father of modern yoga. He has been credited with popularizing yoga, first in India and then around the world.
In order to mark the occasion, the search giant has come up with an interactive Doodle made by Kevin Laughlin that showcases BKS Iyengar in various yoga asanas. According to a Google Doodle blog, Iyengar Yoga is characterized by tremendous control and discipline, which he exercised in ways not limited to confounding long headstands.
Iyengar, who started teaching yoga at the age of 18, spent many hours each day learning and experimenting with various techniques. He taught yoga to several dignitaries like Jiddu Krishnamurti, Jayaprakash Narayan and Yehudi Menuhin. He also taught sirsasana (head stand) to Elisabeth, Queen of Belgium when she was 80.
Cricket master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, novelist Aldous Huxley, actress Annette Bening, and designer Donna Karan are some of the other prominent devotees of BKS Iyengar.
In 1991, Iyengar was awarded the Padma Shri; he also received the Padma Bhushan in 2002 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2014. And after suffering heart and renal failure, the legendary yoga guru passed away at 95 in August, 2014, in Pune.
