Despite years of existence google+ service hasn’t acquired half the popularity as google’s free email service google has now decided to make the social service integration optional which would no longer ask the new gmail users to connect to a google+ account for years.
The users have noticed that new gmail sign-ups are no longer required to connect a google+ account to their email accounts-now, there’s a “no thanks” button that wasn’t there before. Google confirmed to wordstream that the sign-up process was changed earlier this month.
You’ll still need a g+ account if you want to futz around with the rest of google’s services that means. If leaving reviews for apps or media in google play and uploading videos to youtube is totally your bag, you’ll have to take the plunge and upgrade your gmail account regardless.
Still, for those who just need to create a burner email address to give out to less-than-trustworthy websites, the process is a bit less annoying now.
While google+ has some very handy uses outside of social networking, its popularity as a facebook competitor never really got off the ground.
Experts suspect that google may pull the plug on google+? Vic gundotra, the former president of google’s social network, stepped down in april, and the company has been consolidating some of its other social features.
“it’s a wait and watch situation.”
