A new location-sharing feature called live location allows you to share your real-time location inside of a chat for an hour at a time. While Messenger has long included location-sharing, the feature previously only allowed you to share a static point on a map. Useful if you’re staying in one spot, but less so if you’re moving around. Now, with live location, user can keep location sharing enabled for a full hour so friends can pinpoint where he or she is as you’re moving around.
The update is remarkably similar to location sharing feature introduced by Google last week. Facebook says it’s been testing the feature for a little while, though there are a couple differences.
For one, Facebook only allows user to share his or her live location for up to an hour while Google lets the person to share for several hours at a time. Facebook will also show the users estimates for how long it takes to drive to a specific point when someone shares their location with him or her. Of course for some, the idea of sharing real-time location inside of Facebook will be creepy no matter what. But it’s still likely to be one of the easiest ways to find people when you’re out and about.
