Apple Inc. is working on a dedicated chip that will power artificial intelligence on its iPhone, iPad and eventually other products as well. The processor dubbed as Apple Neural Engine will back facial and speech recognition processes on Apple devices. Apple currently uses two processors in their devices, a main processor and a motion co-processor which also renders AI processes. If Apple introduces a new chip that takes the AI load off, it would allow them to improve the battery life.
Many reports in the past have also hinted at Apple bringing in augmented reality in their next generation of iPhones this year. The augmented reality tech would utilise the 3D front-facing camera to perceive depth. An AI-enabled processor would help Cupertino, California-based Apple integrates more advanced capabilities into devices, particularly cars that drive themselves and gadgets that run augmented reality, the technology that superimposes graphics and other information onto a person’s view of the world.
The Apple Neural Chip in question would work in tandem with the other on-board processors to manage facial recognition in photos, predictive text and speech recognition, the report states.
